& Typography
Graphic design is the road less traveled for people with illustration backgrounds. It uses different programs and requires different problem solving creativity. I identified the usefulness of being artist who could do both, and so I began to study graphic design, primarily through books and hands-on learning.
As an Art Director, I have found graphic design to be indispensable. In many ways, graphic design is about assembling disconnected components into a single concept, and on a larger scale this could describe the work of an Art Director. The skills of design have elevated my work as an individual artist and has directed important big picture decisions for the projects on which I work.
This iteration was made in Procreate to pass the time on a flight. I was inspired by the strange, blobby, wavy shape of a Japanese snack and translated it into hand lettered type. I let the artwork drive itself, and veered away from the rigged snack it was inspired by, and instead landed on a gooey, watery type. It's pretty abstract, but darn is it fun. Don't you want this on a postcard?
"Atlanta" is a recurring subject for my typography. I'm inspired by vintage, thick-lettered postcards and iconic city logos like Milton Glaser's "I ❤️NY," making me yearn for a memorable city logo for us Atlanta dwellers.
Each island of Saga Skye required a Take a Break Screen that encouraged kids to get up from their computers and stretch. I created eight screens, each featuring the unique proprieties, locations, and characters of its Skye island. I enjoyed making all of these so much that it was hard to choose just a few to share with you!
My experience extends to website features and physical products. Digital products are made while staying true to the brand’s identity and designing a quality experience for the end user. Physical products are designed to meet constraints inherent to the media and requirements of the client, such as logos, ratings, and copy.
The examples here show a grading system for student understanding, an in-class note system, and the DVD for Courage the Cowardly Dog season 1.
I co-developed the graphics for Saga's Wheel of Knowledge school activity. Based on the mechanics of Wheel of Fortune, students are able to roll for topics, answer questions, and reveal math phases on the game board. This is an entertaining way for students to work together while learning!
Simple category screens were developed with texture, limited color, and energy in mind. This treatment of typography was the first of its kind used in Saga, and required me to think carefully about our brand. I incorporated our brand fonts and colors to keep it cohesive.

Slides require arranging elements, setting up animated transitions, sourcing images, and creating info graphics as needed by the project. The slides I have created have been used to educate organization members, secure funding through grants, instruct high school students, pitch ambitious ideas to stakeholders, and more.
I have had the pleasure of working with podcast logos. Click through the carousel to see the process for each. 👇
Discussing the client's vision helped clarify the direction he wanted for this piece, which was meant to convey the grit, persistance, and power of the creative person.
The client provided a sketch for his idea, and it was my job to stay true to it while refining it for his brand. The finished art is simple, conceptual, and impactful.
Within Skye were several mini games including a card game called Connect the Drops which taught students the principles of ratios using the concept of clean and dirty water. I collaborated with other teams who designed the gameplay to make a phyiscal deck and in-game play board. The logo is by our Creative Director. Below are the steps I took to create the finalized game which students played in classrooms across the USA.
Sketching included iterating several card back designs. We wanted to use something that felt it belonged in Skye and made a connection with water.
I also concepted card layouts and game boards for the digital version in Skye. Multiple game board ideas were presented and was narrowed to one choice per island.
Combining Photoshop and Illustrator allowed me to paint the final art and assemble the cards' components. These were used in Skye and were sent to the printer for a physical version.
Both the digital and physical versions of Connect the Drops were used by students during class. Feedback consistently expressed the student's enjoyment.
Brochures, hand outs, mailers and more can support business both internally and externally. For these projects, I was provided copy and assets then built them into layouts that communicated information quickly and effectively. In some cases, I created or sourced additional images. The final work has been used in both print and digitial media.
