In May 2023 at an outdoor dinner table in Marietta, I decided to become a better speaker. I knew I wanted to become a capable leader and someone who could be relied upon to accurately communicate an organization’s ideals, choices, and projects. It had become apparent to me that of the number of skilled artists I knew, few felt comfortable speaking to strangers, and this gap in confidence prevented them from growing their careers in the ways they dreamed. Desiring to build a better future for myself, it was at this time that I began my journey as a Toastmaster at Powder Springs Toasters.
Toastmasters International is a club with a global network that offers independent, structured learning and critique focused on improving communication and leadership skills. In short, a professional speech club.
I choose their Dynamic Leadership Pathway: a concentration geared towards nurturing leadership in the Toastmaster. Since my first speech to today, I have
become a potent public speaker. I have learned how to fill a speech with value for my audience, how to keep them engaged, and how to stay calm even when a speech does not go as planned.
Toastmasters has nurtured my growth as a leader considerably. I use public speaking skills when creating and giving presentations at work and when communicating ideas to my superiors. I use these skills to speak empathetically and confidently to my direct reports, and to focus on the most important details when working across teams.
This winter I faced discomfort and competed in the Toastmasters annual speech competition. To my surprise, I earned 1st place the club level competition, then again at the Area level. Next, at the District level I earned 2nd place. New-found pride was my reward.
Competing increased my confidence in embarking on uncomfortable projects. I made good on my values by striving to give the best speech possible. I learned new lessons by observing the powerful techniques of other Toastmaster competitors. Rest assured, I will return to get that first place trophy next year.
